Life Safety

Exit and Emergency Lighting for Businesses

When the power goes out, exit signs and emergency lights show people the way out. The Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) calls for them to be tested on a set schedule, and fire inspectors check for it.

We install, repair and test exit and emergency lighting for offices, stores and clinics, and we can switch you to self-testing units that run the monthly test on their own.

  • New exit signs and emergency lights
  • Battery and lamp replacement
  • Self-testing units that check themselves
  • Annual 90 minute testing
Every month30 seconds

A quick test to confirm each exit sign and emergency light switches to battery.

Every year90 minutes

A full test to prove the batteries can light the way out for the whole time.

Keep a written record of every test. Inspectors may ask to see it.

Lighting Upgrades

Commercial LED Lighting Upgrades

Old fluorescent tubes flicker, hum and burn out. Commercial LED lighting gives you brighter, steadier light and lower power bills. There are three ways to make the switch.

  • Lower lighting costs
  • Less time changing lamps
  • No flicker or hum
  • Full light in cold rooms
  1. Retrofit the Fixtures You Have

We convert existing fluorescent fixtures to LED, often by removing the old ballast and wiring the fixture for LED tubes.

Good forSound fixtures and a tight budget

  2. Replace With New LED Fixtures

We take down worn fixtures and put up new LED panels, troffers or high bays sized for the space.

Good forYellowed, broken or outdated fixtures

  3. Add Smart Lighting Controls

Occupancy sensors, daylight sensors and timers turn lights off in empty rooms and dim them near windows.

Good forRestrooms, storage, break rooms and offices

Before you start, ask your utility whether it offers rebates on LED lighting upgrades. We can pair the upgrade with surge protection so new LED drivers last.

EV Charging

Vehicle Charging Stations for Businesses

More of your staff and customers drive electric. A charging station gives them a reason to park at your business and stay a little longer.

We install Level 2 charging stations for businesses, starting with a check of your panel and service so the chargers do not overload the building.

  • Staff parking
  • Customer parking
  • Company vehicles
  • Apartment and condo lots
  • Panel and load check first
  • New circuits sized for each charger
  • Wall and pedestal mounted chargers
  • Outdoor rated parts for Minnesota weather
  • Permits and inspection
  • Room planned for more chargers later

Need a charger at home too? See our home EV charger installation service.

Surge Protection

Commercial Surge Protector Installation

Most surges do not come from lightning. Motors, compressors and elevators switching on and off send small spikes through the wiring all day. Over time, they wear out the electronics your business runs on.

Commercial surge protector installation works best in layers. We start at the main panel and add protection where your most important equipment lives. For homes, see our whole home surge protection service.

What it helps protect

  • Computers and servers
  • Point of sale systems
  • Phones and network gear
  • HVAC controls
  • LED lighting drivers
  • Medical and office equipment
  1. At the main panel

A surge protector where power enters the building stops the biggest surges from storms and utility switching.

  2. At sub panels

A second device on panels that feed key areas, like the server room or kitchen, catches surges made inside the building.

  3. At the equipment

Plug in protectors on computers, registers and other sensitive devices add a last layer right where it counts.

Our Process

How We Work Around Your Business

Your customers and staff come first. We plan every commercial job so you can stay open, or keep any shutdown short and on your schedule.

  1. Talk Through the Job

Tell us what is wrong or what you want built. We ask about your hours and the areas we need to reach.

  2. Walk the Site

We look at the panel, wiring and space, then give you a clear price and a plan.

  3. Schedule the Work

We pick times that fit your business and tell you ahead of time if any power needs to be off.

  4. Finish and Test

We test the work, handle the permit and inspection when needed and clean up before we leave.

Many repairs can be done without closing. When a shutdown is needed, we plan it with you and keep it as short as we can.

FAQs

Commercial Electrical Questions

Have a question about your building's wiring, lighting or panel? Call and talk to a licensed electrician.

(651) 382-9397

Can you work on my business without shutting us down?

Most repairs and many installs can be done while you stay open. When power has to be off, we plan the timing with you and keep the shutoff as short as we can.

What should I do if part of my building loses power?

Check the panel for a tripped breaker first. If it trips again, or you smell burning or see scorch marks, leave it off and call us. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips right away.

How often should exit signs and emergency lights be tested?

Under the Life Safety Code, they get a 30 second test every month and a 90 minute test once a year, with a written record kept. Self-testing units can handle the monthly test for you.

Do you handle permits for commercial electrical work?

Yes. When a job needs a permit, we pull it and set up the inspection, so the work is on record with your city.

Will an LED lighting upgrade lower our bills?

In most cases, yes. LED fixtures use far less power than fluorescent lights and need new lamps much less often. Ask your utility about rebates before you start.

Can our panel handle EV chargers for staff or customers?

It depends on the size of your electrical service and what is already running. We check the panel and the load first, then tell you how many chargers it can support.
