Room by Room

Lighting Ideas for Every Room

Each room has its own job, so each one needs different light. Here is what tends to work well in the homes we visit.

  • Kitchen

You need bright, even light where you cook and softer light where you eat. Recessed lights cover the room, under cabinet lights brighten the counters and pendants hang over the island.

    • Under cabinet lights
    • Pendants
  • Living Room

Living rooms work best with layers of light. Recessed or ceiling lights light the whole room, while sconces and lamps add warmth. A dimmer lets you change the mood.

    • Recessed lights
    • Wall sconces
    • Dimmers
  • Bathroom

Light the mirror from the sides or above so your face is not in shadow. Fixtures near the tub or shower must be rated for damp or wet spots.

    Good fit
    • Vanity lights
    • Wet rated lights
    • Fan and light combos
  • Bedroom

Bedrooms call for soft, warm light. A ceiling fixture on a dimmer and lamps by the bed cover most needs.

    Good fit
    • Flush mount lights
    • Dimmers
    • Bedside lamps
  • Hallways and Stairs

Stairs and halls need light you can turn on from either end. Three way switches or motion sensors help you see each step at night.

    • Motion sensors
    • Step lights
  • Outdoor

Porch, garage and path lights help you get in and out safely after dark. Outdoor fixtures must be rated for wet spots, and timers or photocells can turn them on for you.

Our Process

How We Install a New Light Fixture

Swapping a light looks simple from below. The work above the ceiling is what keeps it safe for years. Here is what happens on each job.

  1. Talk Through the Plan

You show us the fixture and where it goes. We look at the box, the switch and the wiring, then give you a clear price.

  2. Shut Off and Test the Power

We turn off the breaker and test the wires before we touch them. Older homes often have mixed up circuits, so we never skip this.

  3. Check or Replace the Box

The box has to hold the weight of the new fixture. If it is loose, too small or not rated for the load, we fix it first.

  4. Wire and Hang the Fixture

We make tight connections, attach the ground and mount the fixture level and secure. Wires get folded in neatly, not crammed.

  5. Test It and Clean Up

We turn the power back on and test the light, the switch and the dimmer. Then we clean up and take the old fixture away if you want.

Want a new switch or outlet near the light while we are there? We handle outlet and light switch installation on the same visit.

Smell burning or see a scorched socket? Turn the light off at the breaker and call our emergency electricians right away.

Recessed Lighting

Recessed Lighting Installation in White Bear Lake Homes

Recessed lights sit flush with the ceiling and spread light across the whole room. They work well in kitchens, basements and living rooms with low ceilings.

We mark the layout first so the lights land in even rows and miss the joists. Then we cut small holes, fish the wire and set each light. Under an attic, we use housings rated for contact with insulation.

A room full of new lights adds load to your panel. If the panel is full, an electrical panel upgrade may need to come first. Storm surges can also wear out LED drivers and smart dimmers early, so surge protection for your whole home helps them last.

  • Slim LED lights for tight ceilings
  • Housings rated for contact with insulation
  • Even spacing planned before we cut
  • Dimmers matched to the lights

Dry, Damp and Wet Rated Lights: Where Each One Goes

Every light fixture has a rating on its label. It tells you how much moisture the fixture can handle. The wrong one can short out or rust.

RatingMade forCommon spots
Dry ratedIndoor rooms that stay dryBedrooms, living rooms, halls, kitchens
Damp ratedSpots with steam or moisture but no direct waterBathrooms, covered porches, basements
Wet ratedSpots where rain or water can hit the fixtureShowers, open porches, decks, outdoor walls

Not sure what you bought?

Look for the rating on the box or on the label inside the fixture. Or send us the model, and we will check it before the install.

What Affects the Cost of a Light Install

Each lighting job is a little different. A few things make the biggest difference in what you pay.

  • Type of Fixture

A simple flush mount goes up faster than a large chandelier or a row of pendants that must line up just right.

  • Ceiling Height

High and vaulted ceilings take taller ladders and more time to work safely.

  • Existing Wiring

Swapping a fixture on a good box is quick. A new location may need new wire run through walls or the attic.

  • Box and Bracing

Heavy fixtures may need a new box or a brace between the joists so the light stays put.

  • Number of Lights

Several recessed lights or fixtures in one visit often cost less per light than booking each one alone.

  • Switches and Controls

Adding a dimmer, a smart switch or a second switch at the other end of a room adds parts and labor.

You Get the Price Before We Start

We look at the fixture, the ceiling and the wiring, then give you a clear price. No work starts until you say yes.

FAQs

Light Fixture Questions and Answers

Have a question about a light, a dimmer or a fixture you want to buy? Call and ask an electrician.

(651) 382-9397

Can you install a light where there is no fixture now?

Yes. We can add a new box, run wire from a nearby circuit or the panel, and put a switch where you want it. We look at the space first and tell you what the job needs before we start.

Can I buy my own fixture and have you install it?

Yes. Many customers pick their own lights. Check that it is UL or ETL listed and rated for the spot, such as damp rated for a bathroom. Send us the model and we can tell you if your box can hold it.

Why do my LED bulbs flicker or buzz on a dimmer?

Most of the time the dimmer was made for old bulbs and does not work well with LEDs. A dimmer made for LED bulbs usually fixes it. If the flicker stays, we check for a loose connection in the box or switch.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier on a high ceiling?

Yes. We check the box and framing first. If they cannot hold the weight, we add a brace or a box rated for it. We bring the right ladders for tall foyers and stairwells.

How long does a light fixture install take?

A simple swap on a good box does not take long. New locations, recessed lights and heavy fixtures take more time. We give you a time estimate along with the price.

Do I need a permit for new lighting?

It depends on the job. New circuits and new wiring often need an electrical permit, while a simple swap may not. We tell you up front and pull the permit when one is needed.
